3 Movies to Get Excited About at the Victoria Film Festival

  • July 30, 2017

The Victoria Film Festival is back to chase away your February greys. Vancouver Island’s largest and longest-running film festival is currently celebrating 24 years of good movies with the screening of more than 118 films over 10 days. Here are three films in the line-up to get excited about…

Meditation Park
Director: Mina Shum County: Canada/BC Year: 2017 Runtime: 94 minutes

Maria has spent her life being a devoted wife and mother. Never questioning her husband Bing’s authority as a provider and excusing his vices, she has willingly followed his wishes, including not speaking to their estranged son. While doing his laundry, her world is turned upside down when she discovers lingerie tucked away in his pants’ pocket. Unable to look past his hurtful deception any longer, she takes matters into her own hands.

Tulipani, Love Honour and a Bicycle
Director: Mike Van Diem Country: Italy/Netherlands Year: 2017 Runtime: 90 min

Old fashioned and refreshing, van Diem’s latest is a wonderfully engaging tale that travels across three countries to reveal a bizarre family history. Anna (Ksenia Solo) has arrived in Italy to return her guardian’s ashes to her hometown. What she didn’t count on was learning the story of her parents, which with years of retelling, has taken on, shall we say, a certain exaggerated fair.

Ethel & Ernest
Director: Roger Mainwood Country: UK Year: 2016 Runtime: 94 min

Based on an award-winning book by acclaimed British author and illustrator Raymond Briggs, this beautifully hand-drawn film tells the true story of Raymond’s own parents Ethel and Ernest – two ordinary Londoners living through a period of extraordinary social change in twentieth century Britain (featuring the voices of Brenda Blethyn and Jim Broadbent).

If you’re looking for a great hotel in Victoria, The Days Inn Victoria Uptown is the perfect option. Offering breathtaking views of the Gorge Waterway by day and the sparkling lights of the BC Legislature Building by night, the hotel is a fantastic accommodation option for a getaway on Vancouver Island.
