3 Ways to Celebrate Aboriginal Culture in Victoria

  • January 30, 2016

As Canada marks National Aboriginal Day this month – a celebration of the heritage, diverse cultures and outstanding achievements of First Nations, Inuit and Métis people - we take a look at some of the fine aboriginal attractions that Victoria has to offer.

1. Take a Walk

The Songhees and Esquimalt Nations have lived on the site of the city of Victoria for thousands of years. Part of the Coast Salish family, they are descendants of the Lekwungen family of groups. You can learn all about the art, history and culture of the Coast Salish people on The Signs of Lekwungen interpretive walk along Inner Harbour.

2. Hit the Water

Eagle Wing Tours is pretty special because it adds a little aboriginal culture to its wildlife-watching tours. On its Songhees Nation Cultural Tour you’ll head to the Songhees Islands, where a Songhees Nation guide will share the historical background and unique perspective of the people who lived there, before you cruise around the islands looking for seals, eagles and seabirds.

3. Learn at the Legacy Art Gallery

At the University of Victoria’s Legacy Art Gallery you can see some fabulous contemporary indigenous artwork. Check out gorgeous First Nations prints and carvings or the ‘There’s Blood in the Rocks’ video installation that are part of the Origin Stories exhibition until September 16. As Canada celebrates its 150th birthday, the exhibition respectfully acknowledges a much longer history by presenting First Nations’ narratives that move beyond limited settler versions of history.

If you’re discovering a deeper understanding of Vancouver Island’s aboriginal culture this month, The Days Inn Victoria Uptown is in the perfect location. Offering breathtaking views of the Gorge Waterway by day and the sparkling lights of the BC Legislature Building by night, the hotel is a fantastic accommodation option for a long weekend getaway in Victoria this summer.
